Menneen talven myssyjä / Winter bonnets for baby

Kevät hulmahti Roomaan, ja sen myötä talvipipoistakin on luovuttu. Neuloin mussukalle kaksi talvimyssyä, molempia on pidetty paljon. Surku vain, että toinen, tuo beessi, on kadotettu :-(. Onneksi löytyy edes pari kuvaa.

The spring has arrived here to Rome, the winter clothes are not in need anymore. I had made the sweetheart two bonnets for the winter and both of them were in frequent use. What makes me sad, thouhgh, is that the other one, the grey one, is lost :-(. Luckily, I still have some photos of it.

Miehelle vai vauvalle? / For the husband or for the baby?

Niin kauan kuin olemme seurustelleet ja olleet naimisissa, mies on säännöllisin väliajoin muistuttanut siitä, kuinka en ole neulonut hänelle yhtään villapaitaa. (Toisin kuin miehen äiti ;-).) Vain pipon, kaulaliinan ja hanskat. Siispä lupasin jo kaksi vuotta sitten neuloa hänelle paidan. Etsin mallin, ja päädyin Jaredin Cobblestoneen. Langaksi tilasin meren takaa ihanaa O'woolia, jossa on puolet luomupuuvillaa, puolet merinovillaa.

As long as I have known my husband, he has at recurrent intervals pointed out how I still haven't knitted him a sweater. (As opposite to her mum, who has made several ones to him ;-).) I've only knitted him a scarf, a bonnet and gloves. So, two years ago, I promised to make him a sweater. I chose a model, the Cobblestone by Jared. I ordered the yarn from States, the lovely O'wool, which has 50% organic cotton and 50% merino wool.



Tein väitöskirjaa, tulin raskaaksi, vauva syntyi. Langat odottivat kaapissa. Vihdoin aloitin ja lupasin neuleen miehen synttäreiksi valmiiksi.

I was writing PhD, got pregnant, the baby was born. The yarn was waiting. Finally I started it and promised to knit the sweater for his birthday.


Vaan kuinkas kävikään? Tajusin, että neule ei mitenkään ehtisi valmiiksi syntymäpäiväksi. Olin aloittanut liian myöhään ja ollut liian optimistinen.

But then... I realised there was no way I could get it finished for his birthday. I had started too late and been too optimistic.

Niinpä aloitin uuden neuleen, tällä kertaa vauvalle. Vauva on jo 8 kk ja saanut äidiltään vain yhden pienen villatakin ja kaksi pipoa elämänsä aikana.

So I started a new knit, this time for the baby. He is already 8 months and has only got one tiny cardigan and two bonnets from his mum during his life.


Vauva nimittäin tarvitsee uuden villahaalarin. Edellinen, tämä ihana anopin neuloma, on nykyään auttamatta pieni.

Cause the baby needs a new woollen overall. This lovely one he used to wear, made by my mother-in-law, is nowadays by far too small.


Sitäpaitsi neulon sen jämälangoista, mikä mielestäni hyvittää asiaa.

And, I'm knitting it from leftovers - isnt' that a good excuse?

Lupaan neuloa villapaidan miehelle kesällä. Varmasti.

I promise to knit the sweater for my husband this summer. I will.

Hame Sutrissa / The skirt in Sutri

Olen aina tykännyt kirjailuista vaatteissa. Ja hameista. Monta vuotta olen suunnittelut kirjovani villakankaalle kuvioita ja ompelevani siitä hameen. Ostin kerran kankaankin sitä varten. Koskaan en saanut aikaan.

I've always loved embroideries in clothes. And I've always loved skirts. For many years I've planned that one day I'll fill a woollen fabric with embroideries and sew that fabric into a skirt. I even bought the fabric for the embroidery one day. But I never made it.

Pari vuotta sitten löysin etsimäni kankaan kirpputorilta, kangaslaarin pohjalta. Se oli lähes 100 vuotta vanha keinutuolin peitto. Toissasyksyn olin raskaana. Kuluneena syksynä otin sakset käsiini, yrittäen kohdella arvokasta kangasta mahdollisimman varovasti, ja keinutuolipeitosta tuli tämä:

A couple of years ago I found it from a flea market, the embroidered fabric I would have wanted to make. It was almost 100 years old cover of a rocking chair. That autumn I was pregnant. Last autumn I finally took scissors into hands, tried to be as careful as I could with this precious fabric, and the rocking chair cover turned into this:

Hupputakki Genovassa / Spring coat in Genoa

Äiti ompeli mulle uuden kevättakin. My mum sew me a new spring coat.

Se on tosi kiva. I like it a lot.


Siinä on huppu... It has a hood...


... ja hihatasku... and a pocket in the sleeve...


... ja hyljetasku. and a pocket with a seal.


Se ei ole ehkä kovin käytännöllinen, koska se on valkoinen ja käsinpestävä. It might not be very practical, cause it's white and needs to be washed by hand.'


Mutta se on loistava takki tyylikkääseen kaupunkiflaneeraukseen Genovassa. But it's the perfect coat for smart citywandering in Genoa.
